Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Skillet (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Main Components

01 - 500 g ground beef
02 - 900 g frozen tater tots
03 - 200 g shredded cheddar cheese

→ Sauce and Aromatics

04 - 1 medium onion, chopped
05 - 2 tablespoons olive oil
06 - 240 ml tomato sauce
07 - 60 ml ketchup
08 - 60 ml BBQ sauce
09 - 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
10 - 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
11 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
12 - 1 teaspoon salt
13 - 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
14 - 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
15 - 1/2 teaspoon paprika

# Instructions:

01 - Bake frozen tater tots on a lined baking tray following package instructions at 220°C until golden and extra crispy.
02 - Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and chopped onion. Cook, stirring and breaking up the meat, for 8 minutes until beef is browned and onion is soft.
03 - Stir in minced garlic, paprika, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
04 - Pour in tomato sauce, ketchup, BBQ sauce, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix thoroughly. Simmer over medium-low heat for 5 minutes until thickened.
05 - Arrange the crispy tater tots in a single layer on top of the beef mixture in the skillet. Gently press tater tots into the meat sauce.
06 - Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the tater tots. Place skillet under a hot grill (broiler) for 1–2 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbling. Watch closely to prevent burning.

# Notes:

01 - For extra crispy texture, ensure tater tots are baked until fully golden before adding to the skillet.
02 - Avoid overcrowding tater tots; a single layer promotes even browning and prevents sogginess.
03 - Adjust BBQ sauce to taste by choosing sweeter or smokier varieties.
04 - Ground turkey or chicken may be substituted for beef for a lighter alternative.
05 - Add a pinch of chilli flakes, hot sauce, or use pepper jack cheese for added heat.
06 - Diced bell peppers or jalapeños can be sautéed with onions for extra flavour and texture.
