Loaded Classic Chili Cheese Casserole (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Chili

01 - 450 g ground beef
02 - 1 small onion, finely diced
03 - 2 cloves garlic, minced
04 - 425 g canned tomato sauce
05 - 15 g tomato paste
06 - 1 teaspoon chili powder
07 - 0.5 teaspoon ground cumin
08 - Salt, to taste
09 - Black pepper, to taste
10 - Optional: 0.5 teaspoon smoked paprika or pinch of cayenne pepper

→ Casserole Assembly

11 - 6 to 8 hot dogs, cut into thirds
12 - 120 g shredded cheddar cheese, plus extra for topping
13 - 120 g shredded mozzarella or pepper jack cheese (optional)
14 - 1 can (about 340 g) refrigerated biscuit dough or crescent roll dough
15 - 2 tablespoons yellow mustard (optional)
16 - 2 tablespoons ketchup (optional)
17 - 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted

→ Optional Toppings

18 - Chopped green onions
19 - Diced pickles
20 - Crushed tortilla chips or corn chips
21 - Sour cream
22 - Sliced jalapeños

# Instructions:

01 - Preheat oven to 190°C. Lightly grease a 23 x 33 cm baking dish.
02 - In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook ground beef and diced onion until beef is well browned. Drain excess fat.
03 - Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until aromatic.
04 - Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, salt, black pepper, and optional smoked paprika or cayenne. Stir to combine and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
05 - Spread half of the chili evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
06 - Arrange the hot dog pieces evenly over the chili layer.
07 - Drizzle mustard and ketchup over the hot dog layer if using.
08 - Scatter shredded cheddar and optional mozzarella or pepper jack cheese over the layered dish.
09 - Tear biscuit or crescent dough into chunks and distribute evenly over the top.
10 - Pour the remaining chili over the dough and finish with an additional sprinkle of cheese.
11 - Brush the top of the biscuit or dough pieces with melted butter.
12 - Place in the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the casserole is bubbling and the top is golden brown.
13 - Allow to cool for 5 minutes. Add desired toppings such as green onions, sliced jalapeños, crushed corn chips, sour cream, or diced pickles before serving.

# Notes:

01 - For a spicier result, incorporate chopped jalapeños into the chili or select spicy hot dogs.
02 - To reduce carbohydrates, omit the biscuit layer and replace with cauliflower tots or additional cheese.
03 - Casserole can be assembled up to one day ahead; cover and refrigerate until ready to bake.
